One of the few remaining movie theaters on the East End could be a thing of the past, as a popular drug store chain eyes a central location along Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays.
The Southampton Town Planning Board is in the beginning stages of reviewing an application to allow the owner of the building where the Hampton Bays United Artists movie theater is located to bring a CVS to Main Street, replacing the theater.
On Thursday, May 23, the Planning Board will set up a pre-submission conference on an application to convert the 14,886-square-foot theater into a 27,552-square-foot drugstore operated by CVS.
Located at 125 W. Montauk Highway, the movie theater is currently zoned village business, and operates under an allowed use. But also allowed under that zoning is retail use, which a drugstore would fall under.
Plans submitted to the Planning Department show proposed modifications to the 2.7-acre property, including the relocation of light poles, modification of the rear parking lot entrances and the addition of sidewalks.
The plans also show that the existing entrances—one from Springville Road and the other from Montauk Highway—will remain as they are, with 156 parking spaces in the lot.
Alexander M. Gayer, an attorney with Lazer Aptheker Rosella and Yedid, P.C. in Melville, was listed on the filed paperwork, but, when called for additional details about the project, said he was not attached to the project.
Walter Morris of WDP Management Inc. in Huntington is also listed on the paperwork under owner’s endorsement, but could not be reached for comment.
