David B. Wright of Whispering Pines, North Carolina, died peacefully on September 23, at home with his wife of nearly 50 years, Christine (Payne) Wright, by his side. He was 76.

He was always known as a man of service. Born in Southampton, the son of the late Edward and Miller Barker Wright, he grew up in the hamlet of East Quogue.

He graduated from Westhampton Beach High School in 1965, and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. He served as an infantryman in Vietnam and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1969. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Valor while there.

After serving his country, he returned to East Quogue to help run the family business, Edward Wright Cesspool Service, and later worked with Precision Excavating, until retiring and moving to Whispering Pines in 2005.

He was a Life Member of VFW Post 5350 and served as Post Commander and Quartermaster. He was a member of the East Quogue Methodist Church, and later Pinehurst Methodist Church.

He loved to share a good story over coffee, or a celebratory drink and a good cigar.

His generosity, smile and trademark handlebar mustache will be missed by all those whose lives he touched, his family said, noting that he was “one of the good ones.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Katie Wright (Mike) of Florida, Amy Wright (Shavar) of East Quogue; and son, Charles Wright (Francesca) of Whispering Pines; his grandchildren, Kayla, Kyle, and Brayden; his siblings Barbara (Dale) Keasling, Bruce Wright, Sandy Rosendahl, and Keith Wright; as well as extended family and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and interment at Calverton National Cemetery will be held in April 2025.

Memorials and tribute gifts are accepted at Wounded Warriors and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Bonac Boys, Girls Indoor Track Teams Compete at League III Championships

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls indoor track team may have finished last at the League III Championships at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Friday, but they set many new personal bests and a new school record — was not broken once, but twice, in the same meet. C.J. Echavarria initially broke Grace Brosnan’s 2019 school record in the first heat of the 55-meter high hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.79 seconds, but that only lasted mere minutes. Her teammate, Sophia Figueroa, ran 9.68 seconds in the following heat to break Echavarria’s record. Point scorers, which include those placing ... by Drew Budd

Shredding It

I picked up the phone because I needed answers about the cardboard shredder. Packaging used to be simple for my farm. Baskets, then burlap, paper then plastic, but ultimately, from us, the manufacturer, little packaging was required. We still send potatoes in paper sacks, but we can also now send it in bottles, as Vodka, to martini makers all over the Empire State. With this fragile opportunity, comes packaging. The cardboard shredder I am after doesn’t shred cardboard to reduce and destroy it, but rather it handily perforates three-ply boxes, turning pieces into packing material hassle free. Packing material is ... by Marilee Foster
