David H. Greene of Ocean Ridge, Florida, formerly of Westhampton, died on Wednesday, July 9. He was 94.
Mr. Greene was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1913. He attended Harvard University where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a Ph.D in English. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, and moved to Westhampton to retire in 1976.
Mr. Greene was a professor emeritus at New York University, and author of numerous books, including the authorized biography of Irish playwright, John Millington Synge.
He was considered a pioneer in educational television as one of the first professors to teach a course in literature on “Sunrise Semester,” a WCBS program produced in conjunction with NYU to teach for credit college courses on television.
Survivors said this week, he was a scholar, raconteur, jazz pianist, and avid Mets fan.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine (nee Healy); three daughters, Judith Fields, Ph.D, of New York and Westhampton, Candace Moss of New York, and Gail Greene Brezovec of New York and East Quogue; a son, David G., Esq. of New York; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Carol.
Funeral services will be held at a later date.
