David Rogers Osborn of Wainscott died on September 6 at the Westhampton Care Center from complications caused by cancer. He was 88.
Mr. Osborn was born in Southampton to Raymond and Augusta Osborn on May 9, 1932.
He attended the one room schoolhouse in Wainscott and continued on to East Hampton High School, but did not graduate. He was mainly a self-educated man, but he did go back later in life to earn his GED.
Mr. Osborn’s main occupation was farming. He was lucky to farm alongside his brother Charles and his father Raymond, his family noted. He was also known on the East End farming community as the “Cabbage King.”
When not in Wainscott, Mr. Osborn traveled to Nova Scotia in the summer months with his family. After several trips, he bought a house and enjoyed a community that reminded him of Wainscott in his early years, his family said. There, he enjoyed long days “putting” around the bay in an old whaling dory exploring the various islands. He was also an avid reader of history and a great storyteller.
Mr. Osborn is survived by his wife, daughter, son, three grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Charles, sister Ruth and his daughter Nora.
A funeral service will be held outside at the Wainscott Cemetery on September 13 at 1 p.m. for family and close friends. Brockett Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements.
