David Saland, Longtime Lifeguard At Coopers Beach, Dies July 1

David Joel Saland

David J. Saland of Hampton Bays and a longtime lifeguard at Coopers Beach in Southampton died of a heart attack on July 1 at his home. He was 59.

Mr. Saland was born on October 2, 1952, in Queens to Shirley and Joseph Saland. He was raised in Queens and Jamesport, and he attended Mattituck High School. He earned a degree in economics from Wagner College, where he played basketball.

As a young man, Mr. Saland enjoyed summers at Coopers Beach, working as a lifeguard and eventually as the captain of the Southampton Village Ocean Lifeguards for 15 years. He was also a founding member of the North Fork Chess Club, winning its chess championship numerous times.

The former owner of Saland Real Estate in Jamesport, he was a licensed real estate broker for more than 40 years, and was very active in the community. He developed Laurel Links Golf Course. He was on the board of directors in charge of promotion for Eastern Suffolk Board of Realtors, Director of the Year for the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of directors of the North Fork Promotional Council and president of the Aquebogue, Jamesport, and Laurel Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Alexsandra Saland; his son, Mark Mackey of Washington D.C.; his daughter, Jacqueline Saland of Chicago; his mother, Shirley Saland of New Jersey, and his three siblings, Heywood Saland, Ellen Daigle and Bonnie Beck.

A viewing was held on Thursday, July 5, at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays, followed by a gathering at Coopers Beach in Southampton.
