Defining Community

I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Southampton Press for the wonderful article written by Cailin Riley [“They Built It, and People Came: SYS Celebrates 20th Anniversary,” 27east.com, May 31] and the editorial regarding the 20th anniversary of the Southampton Town Recreation Center and Southampton Youth Services Inc. This facility has become vital to local recreation for our community, and its recognition was richly deserved.

While there would be no SYS without J. Andreassi, and I do appreciate the acknowledgment of my role as well, SYS required the effort of so many more. Please allow me to recognize those people.

Our founding board was assembled years before there was an SYS. These men and women, who scratched ideas on paper while exchanging big dreams, were the right people at the right time. Tim Rumph, Michael and Tim Behringer, Aiden Wood, Mark Epley, Mark Fitzgerald, Linda Gilmartin, David Greene, Susanna Herrmann, Allyn Jackson, Nancy Lynott, Tish Rehill and Andy Taylor all made up an impressive collection of dedicated community members.

Another founding member, Scott Johnson, was a new member to our community in the days before SYS was a thought. Scott would go on to became a founding board member and eventually evolved into our executive director. It is Scott’s leadership and dedication that has been critical to all that SYS has become.

The effort went far beyond our board, however. Not only was family time sacrificed, our families contributed in many ways as well. It was a true family effort and a great sacrifice by all.

We will forever be grateful for the vision and courage of Bridgehampton National Bank, the million-dollar contribution made through generous donations from all of you and the town, as well as $1 million in in-kind services donated from plumbers, electricians, tile installers, metal fabricators, masons, carpenters, painters, and so many more.

The dreams and efforts of Wally Glennon, Brian Brady, Jim Stanton and Victor Elmaleh to bring squash to the Hamptons should also be recognized. The generosity of George and Annette Benedict and so many other individuals, foundations and organizations have allowed SYS to continue its mission.

I would also be remiss to not acknowledge the vision and courage former Supervisor Vince Cannuscio and the Town Board at that time showed in agreeing to this crazy idea.

On a personal note, I want to recognize the Reverend Marvin Dozier. It was he who taught me what youth recreation was supposed to be about. I have never forgotten his wisdom. I hope he is looking down and is proud of all we serve.

From Heather Saskas to Terri Kiernan to its current president, Kevin O’Connell, SYS leadership has remained in wonderful hands. Congratulations for all you have accomplished and keeping the dream alive and well.
