Denise May Schramm
Denise May Schramm of North Haven died on May 19. She was 84.
Born in 1928 in Beechhurst to Charles and Ruth Garmy, she attended Flushing schools and attended Barmore School in Manhattan for two years. She spent summers at her grandparents’ house on Actors Colony Road in North Haven. It was there that she met a neighbor, Robert Schramm. They married on March 8, 1952, while he was in the U.S. Army. They relocated two years later to Muttontown and, 15 years after that, to Locust Valley. In 1979, the Schramms moved to North Haven full time.
Survivors said her most important job was her family. Her home was a hub of activity, with neighborhood kids spending time there, as well as Fresh Air Kids from the city each summer.
Ms. Schramm volunteered at Glen Cove Hospital and Southampton Hospital. She was known for her green thumb, and it was evident inside and outside her home, her family said. When not gardening, she enjoyed sitting on the beach listening to the waves and the seagulls.
In 2012, she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus.
Ms. Schramm is survived by her husband, Robert; three daughters, Dede O’Connell, Sue Higgins and Kim Cannon; a son, Robert; eight grandchildren, Trebor, Heidi, Ashley, Meredith, Tommy, Christopher, Catherine and Elizabeth; and two great-grandchildren, Damian and Jordan.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
