Attorney Denise Schoen has joined the Adam Miller Group in Bridgehampton as partner and will specialize in zoning and land-use cases.
Most recently, Schoen has been in private practice in East Hampton. Prior to that, she served for two years as the Sag Harbor Village attorney. Schoen had also worked for the village on a part-time basis for a decade before being appointed its head attorney, first prosecuting cases in Village Justice Court and later serving as counsel to the village’s various regulatory boards, including the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board.
At the Adam Miller Group, she will serve as the lead attorney in the partnership’s zoning and land-use department.
“I’m really excited about it,” Schoen said this week, noting that while working in private practice she had “missed the collaboration with colleagues.”
Schoen said she was impressed by the Adam Miller Group’s rapid rise after being in business for only 15 years. “Adam is a great attorney and a savvy businessman. I know we’ll complement each other and our clients will benefit as a result,” she said in a release. “He has built a team of colleagues that together provide exceptional service to clients, and that’s what appeals to me the most.”
Miller said he had known Schoen for more than 20 years, and that when he opened his Bridgehampton practice, she had been a great help to him.
“There were a handful of local attorneys whom I turned to for advice to help me navigate this new territory that, inherently, involves a lot of nuances and potential pitfalls,” he said in the release. “Denise always made time for me and sought nothing in return. She genuinely wants to see people succeed. Through that collegiality, a friendship followed. We have bounced problems, concepts, strategies off each other for years.”
Schoen attended East Hampton High School before graduating with highest honors from both Southampton College and the SUNY at Buffalo School of Law.
She began her legal career in 1997 in the litigation department of Dewey & LeBoeuf in Manhattan. After returning to East Hampton, she became an assistant East Hampton town attorney and later joined Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelly, Dubin and Quartararo LLP, where she worked to perfect her practice in land use, real estate, and zoning law.
In 2004, she went into practice with two East Hampton attorneys, John Tarbet and Brian Lester. She opened her own office in 2013.
Besides representing Sag Harbor as village attorney, Schoen served as a volunteer member of both the Village ZBA and the Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review.
Schoen is also a retired director of the Sag Harbor Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps and served as a critical care emergency medical technician for nearly 15 years. She used her medical skills to volunteer to provide emergency medical care to Syrian refugees fleeing to Greece and to join Team Rubicon, a national organization providing disaster response around the globe.
She is also a director of the Donald E. Reutershan Trust, which provides nearly $100,000 in financial assistance annually to local schools for art programming to celebrate the legacy of a beloved local artist and educator.
