Former Southampton resident Dennis Michael McGregor of Palm Coast, Florida, died on Sunday, February 14, at Hospice Care at Oceanside in Ormond Beach, Florida. He was 56.
Born on April 17, 1953 in Amityville, he grew up in Southampton, graduating from Southampton High School in 1971. As an adult, his talents took him from watch design for Gruen Watch Company to designing inaugural parties for President Jimmy Carter. After he settled in East Moriches with his wife, Debra McGregor, his work evolved to encompass furniture design, construction and computer drafting.
In 1991, he and his family moved to Palm Coast, where for a combined total of 13 years, Mr. McGregor instructed students on the latest technological advances in computer drafting at both St. Augustine Technical School and Daytona Beach Community College. Most recently he worked in city government, where he served as a geographic information systems technician, moving city planners away from pencil and paper maps to more organized, user-friendly computer maps. This skill aided his work in helping to rebuild the hurricane devastated city of New Orleans.
Beyond his many work accomplishments, Mr. McGregor enjoyed spending time with his family and friends on boat outings, fishing, playing a round of golf or just a relaxing at an afternoon cookout.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Debra McGregor of Florida; his mother, Regina June Thiele of Southampton; two sons, Ian McGregor of Massachusetts and Ryan McGregor of California; a sister, Donna Kreymborg of North Sea; and three brothers, Patrick McGregor and Scott McGregor, both of Hampton Bays and Darren McGregor of Maryland. He was predeceased by his father, Elwood R. McGregor.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road, South Flagler Beach in Florida where prayer services will commence at 11 a.m.
