I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed construction of an additional firehouse by the Southampton Fire District in a peaceful neighborhood of Water Mill. As a resident of this neighborhood, I believe that this proposal poses significant problems, and I urge the community and decision-makers to reconsider their plans.
Firstly, while I acknowledge that the Southampton Fire District is a well-respected organization with competent leadership, it is essential to recognize that this firehouse would irreversibly disrupt the local character of our cherished neighborhood. Water Mill is known for its historical significance and unique charm, and constructing a large-scale firehouse with extensive parking would be incongruous with the area’s existing ambiance.
If the need for an additional firehouse is deemed absolutely necessary, alternative locations, such as along Montauk Highway where several suitable properties exist, should be explored. Such locations would be more aligned with the needs of the community and minimize the disruptive impact on residential areas.
Lastly, it is concerning that the proposed firehouse would be situated near wetlands, posing environmental risks. Wetlands are valuable natural resources that require protection, and the presence of toxic chemicals for firefighting purposes raises concerns about potential contamination. Accidents can occur, even with the best procedures in place, and the proximity to the Mill Pond waterway, which eventually flows into Mecox Bay, presents a significant threat to our delicate ecosystem.
I implore the Southampton Fire District and the relevant authorities to reconsider the proposed location and identify an alternative site that would not jeopardize the integrity of our neighborhood and the environmental health of our precious wetlands and waterways.
I encourage fellow residents to voice their opposition by emailing the Town Planning Board at cshea@southamptontownny.gov immediately, expressing concerns and urging a reconsideration of this project. Let us work together to find a solution that ensures the safety of our community without compromising the beauty and harmony of Water Mill.
Thank you for considering my perspective and giving attention to this pressing matter.
