Very quietly, with little transparency, the U.S. Coast Guard is moving ahead with the auction of 28 housing units declared surplus at their housing site just north of Hampton West Estates, near Gabreski Airport. Information has been impossible to obtain, with Congressman Lee Zeldin’s office being the only source.
The addition of 28 residences potentially can have a catastrophic impact on the Hampton West Estates development. A major concern is price: Suppose all 28 units are sold to one individual, and the average price is below market — say, $200,000 each. That will put many new buyers at Hampton West underwater.
Does anyone care?
Supposedly, Suffolk County has approved, or is about to approve, whatever the Coast Guard is about to propose. Where is the public’s ability to comment?
This neighborhood has built itself up from the bad old days of absentee landlords and is now a thriving workforce housing community. Check the real estate reports — properties sell here.
Are we returning to the absentee landlord paradise?

I am writing in opposition to Joan Tutt’s endorsement of S-8731, which would keep the windmill locked away on the campus of Stony Brook Southampton [“Windmill News,” Letters, June 26]. There are many reasons for its return to the village...
Democrats appear oblivious to a national debt challenge that has become too serious to ignore. The COVID epidemic triggered massive relief spending, and then the Biden administration added trillions more, supposedly for infrastructure and inflation reduction, that turned out to...

I am writing this letter to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to several individuals and organizations for their kind acknowledgment of my many years of public service to the East End communities. As many know at this point, in...
All leaders, especially political leaders, make decisions consistent with their own belief system and ideology. However, our current president is so pathologically self-absorbed that his personality completely dominates his presidency and his policies. His executive orders are not a statement...
When Tim Bishop was our congressman, he held numerous town hall meetings with his constituents. They were raucous affairs. Those were the days of the Tea Party, and its members were outraged that the federal government was expanding health care...
I have a suggestion for Craig Catalanotto, who is on record for opposing cross-endorsements and for allegedly switching alliances from Democratic to Republican Party candidates, such as Cyndi McNamara and Stephen Kiely. When the Pine Barrens Commission was in the...
