Donald M. Elliman
Donald M. Elliman of Westhampton died on February 26, four days short of his 101st birthday.
Mr. Elliman was born in New York, attended the Choate School and Yale—graduating in 1934—where he rowed crew, the genesis of a lifelong passion. He rowed a single shell until he was 98 and introduced countless others to the love of the sport. Leaving Yale during the Depression, he entered the banking industry, taking leave for four years to serve in the Pacific during World War II. He left the Navy as a lieutenant commander. Returning to banking, he rose to be president of the Bank of New York and retired as executive vice president of Marine Midland Bank. He served on numerous boards including Choate, Great West Life and Greenwood Cemetery.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Westhampton and New York City; a sister, Barbara of New York City; a daughter, Dale Balfour of Maryland; a son, Donald Jr. of Denver; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
