National news outlets reported on Friday night that Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s girlfriend and the head of one of President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign committees, tested positive for the coronavirus shortly before the president’s rally at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota on Friday night.
Bridgehampton mega-builder Joe Farrell confirmed on Saturday that Ms. Guilfoyle and Mr. Trump Jr. were guests at a party he threw at a house he owns in Bridgehampton on June 25.
Mr. Farrell said that the depictions of the party in tabloid news outlets were “overblown” and that the party was entirely outdoors and people were being smarter about social distancing than they were made out to be.
“Some people wore masks, some didn’t. And those that didn’t, we’re all adults, and we kept socially distant,” said Mr. Farrell, who hosted a fundraising party for the president at another estate he owns in Bridgehampton. “The party was entirely outdoors, not indoors like [some news outlets] reported.”
When reached by phone, Mr. Farrell was on his way to be tested for the coronavirus, as he said he is every week, to protect himself and the employees of his construction company, the South Fork’s most prolific luxury construction firm, Farrell Building.
He said he harbors no particularly elevated concern because of Ms. Guilfoyle’s recent diagnosis.
“I have the same exposure when I go to the food store or anywhere else,” he said, noting that Mr. Trump Jr. tested negative for the coronavirus. “This was, what, nine or 10 days ago? And her significant other doesn’t have it and they have been together all week.”
Mr. Trump Jr. also owns a home in Bridgehampton, near where the party was held, but Mr. Farrell said he didn’t know if the couple were retreating to it. The builder said he is staying in Montauk this month.
“I drove through Montauk last night and I went by the Memory Motel and there must’ve been 120 kids outside, packed,” Mr. Farrell recalled. “And I went to a dinner party, 10 people, very successful people, some famous people, and we were, you know, careful about staying a little distant. People are living their lives, but, you know, being smart.”
The New York Times reported on Friday night that Mr. Trump Jr. and Ms. Guilfoyle — a former FOX News commentator and ex-wife of Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom who is now the chairwoman of a fundraising committee for the president known as the Trump Victory Finance Committee — left the Mt. Rushmore event before the president’s arrival following her diagnosis and are both now self-isolating.
The Trump campaign released a statement on Friday evening saying Ms. Guilfoyle is not exhibiting any symptoms, but will not be attending any public events.
“She’s doing well, and will be retested to ensure the diagnosis is correct since she’s asymptomatic, but as a precaution will cancel all upcoming events,” a campaign representative told the New York Times. “Donald Trump Jr. was tested negative, but as a precaution is also self-isolating and is canceling all public events.”
