Donald Wayne Calabrese

Donald Wayne Calabrese, known as Cal and a longtime resident of Sagaponack, died on Monday, October 15, at Southampton Hospital after a brief illness. He was 65.

Born and raised in Huntington, he was a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He earned the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1968 to 1974, on both active duty and as a reservist.

After completing his military service, he became a mainstay at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse for 10 years. In 1985, he opened his own restaurants; first The Coast Grill, and later C.J. Thorne. In 1995, tired of the rough and tumble of the restaurant world, he retired.

From then on, his happiest times were spent fishing with friends on Long Island Sound.

Mr. Calabrese is survived by his wife of 34 years,
Janet Gallagher Calabrese, as well as his brother, Thomas John Calabrese Jr. of Lloyd Harbor; two sisters, Mary Calabrese Connors of Massachusetts and Jane Calabrese Duggan of Rockville Centre; four nieces and four nephews.

A private family interment is planned for November.

Memorial donations may be sent to Wounded Warriors, Room 320, 370 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001 or woundedwarriorproject.com

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
