Doris Elizabeth Greene of the Shinnecock Indian Nation died on May 18 at Southampton Hospital. She was 84.
The youngest and last surviving daughter of George T. and Camellia D. Smith, she was born on October 2, 1923. She married Christopher Cuffee Greene on August 27, 1948, and the couple made their home on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. She was a member of the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, where she worked diligently and faithfully for her community.
Mrs. Greene is survived by a daughter, Camilla and her husband Dudley Nation Sr.; son, Christopher Greene Jr. and his wife Dawn; a grandson, Dudley Nation Jr. and his wife Perrihan; a granddaughter, Takisha Nation; three great-grandchildren, Jennah and Amir Nation and Dominic Moore; and three step-grandchildren, Nichole and Joseph Markowski and Alisia Soto.
She is also survived by six sisters-in-law, Bernice and Shirley Smith, and Nellie, Blanche, Amelia and Catherine Greene; three brothers-in-law, Frank, Irving and William Greene; two goddaughters, Carol Josenberger and Nadine Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, George, Sewell, Charles, James and Elmer; four sisters, Rose, Hazel Maudell Smith, Emily Hunter and Arlene Lincoln; and a granddaughter, Jenelle Nation.
The family received visitors on May 21 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Funeral services were held on May 22 at the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Michael Smith officiating. Interment followed at Shinnecock Cemetery.
