Doris J. Scopinich of East Quogue died on April 29. She was 84.
Survivors said her love for the sea started at a young age growing up on the Freeport waterfront, where she eventually met her husband, Fred. They moved to East Quogue from Freeport in 1956, and they opened the Hamptons Shipyard in East Quogue, where they manufactured all types of boats. Ms. Scopinich was in charge of the company office for 58 years.
She was very active with the Dominican Sisters and volunteered with local churches. She participated on the race committee for many years at the Shinnecock Yacht Club, where she was known for saying, “Sail fast!” and enjoyed her years serving as chairwoman. She also loved to play tennis and go bowling with her friends, afterwards finding a great place for lunch.
Ms. Scopinich and her husband loved to travel the Caribbean with friends, sailing from island to island during the winter months. She loved visiting her family in Florida and going to Disney World with her grandchildren, whom she adored, survivors said.
Ms. Scopinich was predeceased by a son, Stephen. She is survived by her husband, Fred; brother, Theodore Lang of Virginia; her children, Fred Scopinich and wife Liz, Susan Delihas and husband Nick, Kathryn Jayne and husband Gregg; three grandchildren, Kevin, Brian and Lindsay; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held one May 4 at Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach, with a funeral Mass the following day.
Memorial donations may be made to Dominican Sisters charities or Southampton Hospital’s dialysis center.
