Dorothy L. Klug of East Quogue died peacefully at her home on February 1. She was 81.

She spent her childhood in Riverhead with her parents Doris and Frank, along with her brother Frank Jr.

She was a graduate of Riverhead High School. While in high school, she met Alan Klug and they started dating. They were married on June 29, 1962. They had two daughters, Kristen and Donna.

She went to beauty school, where she earned her beautician license. She then opened her own hair salon in Hampton Bays.

She and her daughter Kristen signed up together to become Girl Scouts. When both her daughters finished being Girl Scout seniors, she continued on site directing and was charge of the Girl Scout camps on some weekends. She also did numerous fundraisers for the Girl Scouts, like holding a Chinese auction, which was able to put a handicap accessible pool at one of the camps.

She received numerous awards, but the one she was most proud of and named after her is the Dorothy L. Klug Golden Lantern Award. This award was presented to her in 2023 and marks the lifelong commitment she has made to the Suffolk County Girl Scouts.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother; and her husband. She is survived by her two daughters Kristen and Donna; her son-in-law Christopher; and her grandson Christopher Jr.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. A prayer service will take place on Thursday, February 13, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in East Quogue.

Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town.
