Dorthea Ann Obrig, formerly of Hampton Bays, died on August 14 in Carmel, New York. She was 85.
Born on October 31, 1930, in Rochester, she was raised on dairy farms in upstate New York and graduated valedictorian from Union Springs Central School in June 1948. She attended Ithaca College and Syracuse University, and graduated from Cortland State Teachers College, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
On June 14, 1952, she married Richard F. Hagemeyer. The family, now including a son, David, and a daughter, Carol, moved to a newly constructed house in Hampton Bays in 1963. Survivors said she loved to cook and sew, made many friends, enjoyed being a den mother for the Cub Scouts and was involved with the Brownies and PTA. She learned to drive at the age of 39. In 1971, she resumed her teaching career at East Quogue Elementary School, where she taught first and second grade until she retired in 1988.
Her husband died of cardiac arrest in May 1981, after which she redoubled her involvement in the community, especially at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, becoming an active and committed member. On July 1, 1989, she married John Obrig, whom she met at St. Mary’s. He predeceased her in September 2003.
In 2005, she moved to Patterson, New York, to be close to her daughter, son-in-law and two of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Obrig is survived by a son, David and wife Valerie Martin of Massachusetts; and a daughter, Carol and husband Chris Eminizer of Patterson; and four grandchildren, Rory and Ryan Martin-Hagemeyer, and Nicholas and Jess Eminizer.
A funeral service took place at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on August 20. Arrangements were under the direction of the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays.
