Douglas Lawrence Godbee of Durham, North Carolina, died on February 8. He was 68.
Mr. Godbee was born on July 9, 1945, in Southampton, the son of H. Lawrence Godbee and Helen Howell Godbee, both of whom predeceased him. He graduated from Southampton High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster on the Charles S. Sperry. In 1987, he married Barbara Baker of Yonkers. They settled in North Carolina.
Survivors said Mr. Godbee was a skilled painter and craftsman and enjoyed tinkering with cars, especially during his youth. Fishing and duck hunting, and later tennis, were among his favorite activities. His wife said he enjoyed gardening and adored his three dogs, Muffin, Treelo and Zoey. He had no children.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Godbee is survived by four sisters, Jane Burns, Lynne Burgess, Priscilla Godbee and Nanette Stillman; aunt and uncle, Janet and Joseph Leiper; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and a memorial service were held on February 14 at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas in Raleigh, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held in Southampton at a later date.
