Dr. Gerard Patrick McLoughlin of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and formerly of Southampton, died on September 26 in Florida, after a short illness. He was 86.

He was born in Brooklyn on February 8, 1939, to John and Mary (Kelly) McLoughlin of Drumkeeran, County Leitrim, Ireland. He was the youngest of nine siblings.

He attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School and Cardinal Farley Military Academy before graduating from Belmont Abbey College. He went on to attend University College Galway Medical School in Galway, Ireland. After completing a residency and fellowship in pediatric medicine in Toronto, Canada, he returned to Long Island.

In 1973, he opened a private pediatric practice in Southampton and served as an attending physician associated with Southampton Hospital for more than 35 years. Over the course of his career, he cared for countless children, many of whom still have fond memories of him. His passion for medicine carried on after his retirement, constantly following up on the latest developments.

McLoughlin’s greatest joy was being on the water, whether it was fishing trips on his boat, the Long Gull, out to the canyons, or simply trolling around Peconic Bay. He was an active member of the Bullhead Yacht Club and the Smyrna Yacht Club.

He also had a deep love for his golden retrievers — Tully, Kruger, Shinny, and Southy, and could often be found on the beach, happily throwing a ball for them at the ocean’s edge, or at the nature reserve.

McLoughlin was a devout Catholic and had been a dedicated member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in New Smyrna Beach and the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary McLoughlin; his sister, Mary McHugh; and his brothers, John, Michael, James, Francis, and Thomas. He is survived by his sister, Margaret McLoughlin of Lynbrook; his brother, Joseph McLoughlin of Southampton; and 30 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Interment will follow at Southampton Cemetery.

SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE — Matthew Kopoulos, 34, of East Hampton was arrested by Village Police on December 2 and charged with petit larceny and unlawfully fleeing an officer, both misdemeanors, stemming from a September 25 incident in which police say Kopoulos stole items from the 7-Eleven on North Sea Road and then fled the scene on an e-bike. When a Village Police officer attempted to stop him he sped away and drove onto the Shinnecock Territory. Love in Action

On behalf of the Hamptons United Methodist Church, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this year’s free community Thanksgiving dinner a remarkable success. Because of your kindness, we were able to serve nearly 500 of our neighbors — families, seniors, workers and individuals from all walks of life — by providing a holiday meal for their table. For the sixth year in a row, we are also deeply indebted to our fearless leader, Denise Smith-Meacham. A Day of Quiet

November 27, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Morning: I hear the screech owl, the great-horned owl, the Cooper’s hawk, Carolina wren, white-throated sparrow, chirps of the cardinal, red-breasted nuthatch, the cooo of the mourning dove; songs of rooster, flicker, dark-eyed junco. Titmouse, blue jay. Wind, barely a breeze, whispers haaaaaaaa in wind language, lovingly. Tranquility. Peace. I’m alive — ping of chill in the air, my skin zings. This sacred silence is why I moved here 40 years ago. But it’s completely gone now. And why? Was our designation of “green community” just a photo-op? A lie? Words co-opted like the phrase ... by Staff Writer
