Dr. Joseph L. Berkeley of Water Mill died on December 9 at Southampton Hospital. He was 89.
Raised in Brooklyn, New York, he built his Water Mill house on an undeveloped cul de sac in 1974.
A veteran of World War II, he served for three years in the European theater of operations.
He graduated from Ohio State University and remained an avid Buckeye fan all his life. He received his dental degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and was a skilled oral surgeon.
His daughter Dr. Linda Berkeley recalled him as an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life, adding that he will always be an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. His patients adored him, survivors said, noting that he was greatly loved and will be missed.
He is survived by his cherished friend, Sue Charney Fischer; a son, Dr. Alan Berkely and his wife Beth of Scarsdale; two daughters, Dr. Janet L. Berkeley and her husband Rob Duboff of Massachusetts and Dr. Linda Berkeley and her husband Will Pecau of Washington, D.C.; five grandsons, Joshua, Benji, Brett, Jack and Sam; and three granddaughters, Shannon, Sara and Julia. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Esther Berkeley.
Funeral services were held on December 11 at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan, followed by interment at Knollwood Park Cemetery in Queens. A memorial service to be held at Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor will be announced in a future edition of The Press.
