Dr. L. Arne Skilbred, retired orthopedic surgeon, died on September 6 at Southampton Hospital after a one-year battle with lymphoma. He was 83.
Dr. Skilbred was born on April 23, 1930, in Sandjeford, Norway, to Lars Christian Skilbred and Agnes Larsen Skilbred, and came to America at the age of 16. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Friends School, Amherst College, and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital College of Physicians and Surgeons, and was a captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army.
He began his orthopedic practice in Montclair, New Jersey, and moved to North Haven in 1985 to begin his practice in Southampton. After his retirement from surgery, he became the medical director of Southampton Hospital for five years.
“Throughout his career at Southampton Hospital, Dr. Arne Skilbred served many roles, including talented orthopedic surgeon, Medical Director, and quality improvement leader. He was a kind and considerate man who was loved by staff throughout the Hospital. His smile and quiet demeanor were always a welcomed addition to every effort he joined. We all join his beloved family in mourning his passing,” said Southampton Hospital President and CEO Robert S. Chaloner.
Dr. Skilbred was the past president of the Essex County Medical Society, the New Jersey Orthopedic Society, the Suffolk County Medical Society and the New York Orthopedic Society. He was a member of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the Southampton Golf Club. He was currently on the board of directors of the finance committee of Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company, and a member of the Performance Improvement Joint Conference Committee at Southampton Hospital.
He was an avid sailor, golfer and world traveler.
Dr. Skilbred is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dianne of North Haven; children, Jennifer Skilbred and Eric Skilbred, both of Sag Harbor; and children from a prior marriage, Lars Skilbred of Oregon, Amy Skilbred of Alaska, Kari Roberts of Connecticut and Anders Skilbred of Colorado; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Harold Skilbred of California; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting was at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on September 9, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Andrew’s Church in Sag Harbor on September 10. Memorial donations may be made to Southampton Hospital, 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton, NY 11968.
