Dr. Martin Obler of Sag Harbor died peacefully at home on June 25, surrounded by his loving family. He was 88.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and Knicks fan, he was known for his vibrant spirit and larger-than-life presence. He lit up every room he entered, his family said, sometimes with a story, sometimes with a joke, often with a strong opinion, and always with love.
A deeply personable man, he had a gift for conversation and a knack for making people feel important and seen. Whether chatting with lifelong friends, new acquaintances, colleagues, patients or complete strangers, he brought joy through his humor, curiosity, and boundless supply of wisdom, solicited or not.
He and his family moved to Sag Harbor more than 30 years ago, but he continued to commute to his Manhattan office to see his patients. He was a psychotherapist who continued to see clients until he was well into his 80s. Only the onset of COVID slowed him down.
He is the author of several books, and was a professor of psychology at Brooklyn College for several decades, where his unconventional manner and teaching style endeared him to his students.
He is survived by his wife, Robyn; his four children, Gil, Dita, Richard and Jade; his sister-in-law Cindy Wishengrad; his son-in-law Kevin Massey; and three grandchildren, Dashiell and Kassia Massey and Lucas Clementi.
Services were held on June 27 at the Old Whalers’ Church in Sag Harbor.
