Dr. Richard “Dick” James Hastings died on December 31 at his home in Woodstock, Vermont, of cancer.
A former resident of Remsenburg, Dr. Hastings was born in Groton, New York, on January 7, 1933, to Katherine McCarthy Hastings and Timothy James Hastings. He attended Groton High School, graduating valedictorian of his class. He played football at Dartmouth College and graduated in 1955.
After spending two years in the U. S. Navy as a lieutenant junior grade on the USS Pawcatuck, Dr. Hastings graduated from Dartmouth/Cornell Medical School in 1961. He practiced orthopedics at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead for more than 30 years, serving as chief of surgery and as a trustee. He retired from his medical practice in 2000 and moved to Woodstock.
He was a Civil War buff, avid tennis player, enthusiastic gardener, entertaining poet and challenging quizmaster.
Dr. Hastings was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Helen and Marie, and his former spouse, Jane Pfeifle Hastings. He is survived by his wife, Jill; two children and their spouses, Cary and Jim Plamondon of Maryland and Timothy and Kim Hastings of Florida; six grandchildren, Jay, Brian and Kathryn Plamondon, and Alex, Kate and Claire Hastings; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial Mass took place at Our Lady of the Snows in Woodstock on January 4. Interment and a memorial service will take place in the spring in Hanover, New Hampshire, at a date to be determined. An online guest book may be found at cabotfh.com.
