Runners hoping to stretch their legs out over a lengthy distance in the 12th annual Hampton Bays Lions Club “Over the Bridge” Race in Hampton Bays last Saturday morning had to settle for the shorter distance, as flooding on Dune Road from the outer bands of Hurricane Lee swirling off the coast forced the event, which typically offers participants a choice between a 10K and 5K route, to pare down to just the shorter distance this year.

The Southampton Town Police Department informed the race directors the day before the race that excessive flooding on Dune Road would cause a safety issue for the runners of the 10K, which typically starts down by the Shinnecock Inlet on Dune Road. Those runners who signed up for the 10K were automatically entered in the 5K, which starts at the Old Ponquogue Bridge Marine Park.

More than 250 runners crossed the finish line in the 3.1-mile race on what was a blustery day, with Sergey Avramenko, 38, of Southampton winning the race in 16:31 (a 5:19 mile pace). Craig Rau, 31, of Shoreham was second in 18:12 (5:52), followed by Michael Holuka, 29, of East Quogue (20:25, 6:34), Chris Lorenzini, 39, of Sag Harbor (20:28, 6:35), and Ted Wolfersdorf, 33, of East Quogue (20:31, 6:36), who rounded out the top five.

Tara Farrell, 44, of East Quogue was the first female finisher and 8th overall in 20:38 (6:39). Sophia Galvan, 15, of Hampton Bays was the second female finisher (21:50, 7:02).

Full race results are at elitefeats.com.

Proceeds from the race help sponsor seeing eye dogs for community members in need, including wounded veterans.

The Lions club contributes to the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation and Canine Companions for Returning Veterans, in addition to funding scholarships for students in the Hampton Bays and Westhampton Beach school districts. Race proceeds have also helped fund local churches, the Dominican Sisters, Boys Scouts, Girls Scouts, Little League, Maureen’s Haven and the St. Rosalie’s food pantry.
