East End Hospice received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in its 2023 Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Hospice Survey released August 30. According to a press release, East End Hospice is the only hospice on Long Island to receive a 5 out of 5 stars rating. Only 11 percent of the more than 5,500 hospices nationwide received 5-stars.
The CAHPS Hospice Survey assesses the experience of hospice patients and caregivers. It measures various indicators to determine a ranking from one to five stars, with five being the highest possible score. The survey serves as a decision aid for families selecting a hospice program and establishes national hospice care benchmarks.
Measured indicators include communication with family, getting timely help, treating patients with respect, emotional and spiritual support, help for pain and symptoms, and training family to care for patients.
Peter Halstead, chairman of the East End Hospice board of directors, noted the unique structure of East End Hospice as the region’s only independent, not-for-profit hospice and acknowledged, “Our clinical team are our patients and their caregivers’ advocates and trusted partners. They’re highly skilled, and this assessment confirms their tremendous commitment to our patients.”
President and CEO Mary Crosby emphasized that the 5-star rating reflects East End Hospice’s continued commitment to offering the highest quality hospice care in the region.
“To have CMS validate our efforts with a 5-star rating based on the experiences of our patients and families is an absolute honor,” said Crosby.
East End Hospice has a 98.5 percent average caregiver satisfaction rating and is recognized by the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of New York State as a Top 10 Hospice statewide, further reflecting the organization’s commitment to high-quality care.
