Win and they’re in.

Despite a 16-1 loss to East Hampton on Saturday at Hampton West Park in Westhampton, the East End Little League 12-and-under baseball All-Stars can still get into the playoffs of the District 36 Tournament if they defeated Sag Harbor on Monday. Both teams went into that game with identical 2-1 records in pool play. East End manager Paul Neumaier said his team could still potentially get in if the team lost on Monday, but it would be a scenario where a number of variables would have to take place for it to happen.

Results of Monday’s game occurred too late to appear in this week’s July 4 edition of The Press. The playoffs were expected to begin Wednesday. Check out 27east.com throughout the week for updates.

Having already defeated Moriches Bay, 10-8, on June 24, East End earned its second victory of pool play with a 4-2 victory over Southampton at Hampton West Park on June 27. Ron Michne started on the hill and pitched a solid 3 ⅓ innings, but Michael Heptig was the difference maker, hitting a three-run home run over the fence in center field in the bottom of the first to give East End an early lead. He also pitched the final two innings to close out the game and secure the win. Ryan Flynn had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs, one of which was a key insurance run when he stole home in the bottom of the third.

Gabe Dawson provided a bright spot in the loss to East Hampton this weekend, hitting a solo home run over the fence in center field to help East End avoid being shut out.

This year’s team includes Ben Cariello, Tucker Collins, Gabe Dawson, Ryan Flynn, Chase Glover, Michael Heptig, Callan Hughes, Ron Michne, Matthew Neumaier, Logan Rice, Thomas Seay and Cole Smith. Paul Neumaier is assisted by Jay Glover and Mark Smith. East End Little League includes residents from Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, East Quogue, Remsenburg and Speonk.
