The Wellness Foundation recently presented its inaugural School Wellness Leadership awards at the East End Wellness Conference on May 11 at The Muses in Southampton. The awards are intended to recognize the work of educators dedicated to wellness in their schools and to inspire other schools to take action.

The 2017 Excellence in School Wellness Award was given to East Hampton Middle School for its long-term dedication to school wellness. Health teacher Lea Bryant and school nurse Barbara Tracey have led East Hampton’s Bonac-on-Board to Wellness program for 13 years. This innovative program hosts different wellness events such as a community 5K, dance classes culminating in the “Mad Heart Ball” and a “Chef Wars” competition. The program offers school-wide nutrition education and has been a powerful advocate for healthy items in the cafeteria, and has created a “student awareness program” to eliminate bullying and help students manage stress.

The runner up for the school award was Remsenberg-Speonk Elementary School for its efforts to reduce junk food in school and cook school lunches from scratch, as well as instituting a school Walking Club.

The 2017 School Wellness Champion Award was given to Lisa Serrell of Southampton Elementary School. Ms. Serrell brings a deep passion and commitment to her work as a physical education teacher and she promotes a culture of wellness throughout the school. According to the Wellness Foundation, she is not afraid to challenge the status quo and she consistently goes above and beyond to dedicate her time and energy to positive change. Some of the initiatives that Ms. Serrell has implemented include having students run a lap at the start of every recess, distributing pedometers for students to track their steps, and creating a fun, annual field day event. She also instructs other teachers in ways to get kids moving, including how to use Brain Breaks effectively in the classroom. She is an active member of the school district’s wellness committee, and recently advocated successfully to secure daily physical education classes for all elementary school students.

The runner up for the School Wellness Champion award was Christina Cassel, the home and careers teacher at Southampton Intermediate School, for the inspiring wellness topics that she brings to her class and her strong commitment to the school garden.

The Wellness Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides education and programs to help adults and children lead healthy lives, and works with educators to create healthy schools.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
