East Hampton Community Notes, October 27

Thank you to the East Hampton Kiwanis Club for the fall Family Fun Day they put on for Saturday! Community families came out in droves for the bouncy castles, pony and train rides, and pumpkin art activities. There was music, a magician and a costume contest. Squeals of laughter from both happy children and adults could be heard from afar. In spite of children having fun everywhere, it was extremely well organized with safety as a priority (which is hard to pull off). At one point there was a problem with the train and five burly Kiwanis members swooped in and had it fixed in a blink of an eye. It was truly a wonderful event that really did bring the community together, and raised some money for all the wonderful outreach programs that the Kiwanis Club runs. Well done!It seems that there are always new restaurants in East Hampton. New “see and be seen” places pop up for a season or two, featuring menu prices that might cause the average consumer to gasp, and as soon as the regular Joe can get a reservation, they are suddenly closed. There are a few places in East Hampton that have rebuked this way of life and stood the test of time. Cafe Max has been one of the best kept secrets in East Hampton. It has been quietly doing business for twenty-five years, and while they do have a long list of celebrity clientele, they’d never reveal it. It was nicknamed “Un-Hampton” because they catered to people who just wanted to enjoy delicious food in peace and not be bothered by the hoopla. It has been a local favorite for decades, a place to get away from the ruckus and have a great dinner. Tragically, like all good things, the era of Cafe Max is coming to an end. The lease is up and they have announced that they will be closing their doors forever on Sunday, November 20. They will be having specials for the next four weeks to go out in style, starting with any bottle of wine from their list for $40, and, of course, they always have their price fix menu. So, if you’ve always passed it by and been meaning to give it a try, it’s your last chance. And if it is one the places on your list of favorites then you’ll want to head down to wish the staff a fond farewell. For more information, call Sami at 631-324-2004.

There is a house down the road from me for sale for $2.8 million. Housing prices are crazy, but what if I told you that you could buy a house for $2,700? Now you can. The nonprofit group East End 4 Ecuador (EE4E) is holding a fundraiser at 7 p.m. this Friday, October 28, at the Stephen Talkhouse to help rebuild East Hampton’s sister city, Pedernales, Ecuador, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake last April. EE4E has teamed up with an organization that is rapidly reconstructing housing for those in need at a price of $2,700 each. To make the evening amazing there will be live music by Luis Munoz, Mila Tina, Mama Lee & Friends, and Mambo Loco, a silent auction, raffles, and delicious snacks. It’ll be a fun night for a great cause!

After a night of fun, it’s time to spend time with the family. In the spirit of the season, the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) is holding a Halloween party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. The party will have a walk through a haunted trail, a costume contest for kids and pets, treats, games and more. There will also be adorable cats and dogs up for adoption, in case you are looking for a real treat and new member of the family. Admission is free for all. For more information, contact ARF at 631-537-0400 or go to www.arfhamptons.org.

After spending time with furry friends, you’ll want to keep the party rolling for the youngster in your family. Luckily, the Ladies Village Improvement Society (LVIS) is holding its Halloween Open House Spooktacular soiree at its beautiful abode on Main Street from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. There will be music, dancing, games, creepy stories, treats, pumpkin decorating, a costume contest and more. All kids get sent home with a goodie bag. The ladies really know how to throw a party. If you have any questions, contact Vicki at 631-324-1220 or go to their website at www.lvis.org. See you there!

Keeping the good times rolling, the Fifth Annual Mary Haven’s Auction Benefit will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church’s Hoie Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 30. The event raises money to provide housing for homeless members of the community. The afternoon features an auction with specialized theme baskets, art and vacation packages, and a bake sale. The cost of entrance is a new pair of socks for a man or woman. Good times will be had by all. For more details, call Sara Blue at 631-726-6078.

Don’t forget that Monday is Halloween! There will be all kinds of creatures roaming the streets, clad in costumes toting bags of candy and treats. If you are driving on the roads around town and through residential neighborhoods, be sure to drive carefully and watch out for excited kids running around hopped up on sugar. Happy Halloween!

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
