Happy Fourth of July. And may God always bless America! On this patriotic weekend, an extra special thank you goes to Sergeant Donald Wilson, who has reenlisted in the New York Army National Guard. Sgt. Wilson, who hails from East Quogue, will continue to serve with Company B, 3-142nd Aviation.

As for me, I’m in heaven. I’m writing my column out on the terrace, the warm summer sun on my shoulders, reminding me of my all-time favorite John Denver song. The baby groundhogs are very busy destroying my bronze fennel. Wren babies are noisily begging for food in the painted birdhouse while blue jays and cardinals race to the feeders for more and more sunflower seeds, their bright colors creating magical moments in my garden. A hummingbird feasts on my planted-from-seed bright nasturtiums. And a catbird stealthily hops onto the terrace to take away some of Emmy Lou’s leftover cat food.

For me, life cannot get any better than this.

And, speaking of beautiful scenes, doesn’t downtown Main Street look great? The planters surrounding the pear trees are all abloom while, above, the beautiful cascading geraniums add to the ambiance. Many thanks go to the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce and the East Quogue Beautification Committee, respectively.

On a more serious note, the news from the hallowed halls of higher academia just keeps rolling in.

Kara Kearns earned her bachelor of arts degree in English from Boston University and Rebecca Kober received her diploma from SUNY Oneonta at a commencement ceremony that was held on May 17.

Tal Gordon of White Birch Trail made the dean’s list at SUNY Oswego. Todd, a sophomore, is majoring in business administration.

Abby McLaughlin, a member of the Class of 2015, was named to the dean’s list at Providence College.

And, finally, Kelly Crowley made the dean’s list at The University of Scranton while Jennifer Seychell was named to the dean’s list at SUNY Oneonta.

Congratulations to all our East Quogue collegians—you have made us so very proud of you!
