Sunday was an absolutely picture-perfect day for a parade! And our hamlet’s annual Memorial Day parade was a fitting tribute to all of the dedicated men and women of the armed services. Many thanks to parade chairman Allyn Jackson, guest speaker Bob Holley and the members of all the organizations that marched in the parade for making this such a special event.

Aren’t the colorful hanging flower baskets absolutely beautiful? Once again, the East Quogue Beautification Committee has added its special touch to Main Street!

Children Helping Children: Congratulations to all the children enrolled in our East Quogue United Methodist Church Nursery School. They participated in a trike-a-thon and collected more than $500 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The nursery school is currently enrolling children for fall classes. For more information, please call Sarah Mendenhall-Luhmer at 653-5113.

The next meeting of the East Quogue Citizens Advisory Committee will take place on Wednesday, June 9, at 7 p.m., in the library of the East Quogue Elementary School. Everyone is invited to the group’s meetings and membership is open to all hamlet residents.

The CAC is gathering information about East Quogue for a new town-sponsored website that will highlight the history of each hamlet with a photograph, brief history, and a list of organizations and contact persons. If you have any suggestions or information that you would like included, please attend the meeting or send me an e-mail at the above address.

The Eastern Long Island Audubon Society will hold its monthly meeting at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge on Monday, June 7. There will be a short nature chat starting at 7:15 p.m., followed by the main program at 8 p.m.

This month’s guest speaker is my friend and kindred spirit Suzanne Ruggles. She will speak about native wildlife habitat gardening and the tyranny of landscaping. Suzanne is an instructor at The Nature Lyceum for Organic Horticulture, sits on the Board of Directors of The Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons and is known locally as “the barefoot gardener.”

If you would like to learn how to attract wildlife to your garden, improve your relationship with the world around you, and experience the benefits of a garden in harmony with nature, then this is a must! To join our local Audubon Society or for information about its many programs, field trips and bird counts, visit easternlongislandaudubon.homestead.com.

Scholars Among Us: Jillian D’Abramo received her bachelor’s degree in art and design from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University during commencement exercises on May 15. Jillian is the daughter of Frank and Caroline D’Abramo of Malloy Drive, and a graduate of Westhampton Beach High School. Congratulations!

In the news from SUNY at New Paltz: Morgan Lonnie received an undergraduate degree in English, and Kristen Alestra and Shari Griswold both earned their undergraduate degrees in theater arts.

Congratulations to Marist College graduates Kurt Bryant Berglin, who received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and studio, and Lauren Anne Burns, who earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing!

The New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association selected East Quogue’s Matt McAllister as one of its 2010 Senior Scholar Athletes. Matt, captain of the Bryant University Bulldogs for the past two years, recently graduated with a master’s degree in business administration.

Feel Like Running?: The third annual Peg Larkins Memorial 5K race will be held on Saturday, June 5, in Remsenburg. For information, call Lisa Fox at 325-8993 or visit rsufsd.org or active.com.
