Last Sunday was a brilliant fall day—one of those spectacular days to cherish before the chill winds of winter set in. And nothing got my mind off the current state of affairs in our country better than getting lost with my grandchildren in the labyrinth of twists, turns and dead ends carved into the corn stalks at Fairview Farms in Bridgehampton. Since the farm abuts Swan Creek, you guessed it, this year’s maze was cut in the shape of one of my favorite birds.Tick tock, tick tock. The holiday season is almost upon us and over at our East Quogue Elementary School, there’s only two weeks to go until the much-anticipated “big night” when the PTA hosts its second annual holiday boutique. Among the “goodies” for sale for holiday gift-giving will be artisan chocolates, hand-crafted candles, gorgeous jewelry and beautiful clothing, as well as totes, lavender, fragrances and cosmetics. I’ll also be there with my stained glass. So, plan on stopping by the school Thursday, December 1, from 6 to 9 p.m., for a little pre-holiday shopping.
By the way, if you are a vendor and would like to participate, it’s not too late. Please visit polarisoffice.com/d/2RQ20trk for an application.
Continuing with my “tis the season to shop” column, Saturday, December 3, is “the” day for holiday shopping in and around our hamlet so make certain to mark those calendars.
Start off early on Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Christmas Fair with a magical stroll through the famous cookie walk. For epicureans, irresistible home-baked goods, soups, jams and preserves await while the Christmas shop, filled with handmade wreaths, will thrill the shopper in all of us.
The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and all proceeds will support the various ministries at St. Mary’s. The church is located at 165 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays. For more information, please call 631-728-0776.
Later in the day, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Holiday Open House at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge is the place to be. With lots of fun crafts to entertain the kids, you can enjoy shopping for handmade gifts from local artisans. For more holiday gift-giving there will be a great selection of QWR apparel, as well as fair-trade gift items from the Sobornost for the World Foundation. I’ll be there too so make sure to stop by and say hello. For more information, please visit QuogueWildlifeRefuge.org or call 631-653-4771.
For a magical end to a perfect day, the East Quogue Beautification Committee will host its annual holiday tree lighting and caroling at 5 p.m. on the East Quogue Village Green.
