Eastport community notes, July 15

author on Jul 13, 2010

When you overhear people talking in the Hamptons during the summer about being to the right or to the left, they aren’t talking about politics! They are talking about what side of the beach they are sitting on.

You can hear people on their cell phones telling their friends that they’re on the left or on the right, directing them to the correct side of the lifeguard stand. You can’t really say, “Look for the striped umbrella,” or “I have a blue beach chair.” Too general! Sometimes you need a GPS to find your friends on the beach. As a matter of fact, I’m surprised there isn’t one on the market already. So, right or left, all politics aside, is really a summertime beach thing. Just FYI!

Well, 85 degrees is almost a cold front these days and after that day when it was 103, even 90 degrees seems like a blessing. We went through ice pops like crazy that week and all meals eaten were cold.

It was slim pickins in the ice cream section at King Kullen. The ocean warmed up to Caribbean-like temperatures and all pool heaters (to the happiness of their owners) were turned off for good! I personally like a good heat wave for it’s a great chance to just lie around, be lazy and get away with it!

Protecting The Environment: Oysters, lobsters and clams are an important part of our economy and maritime culture, and a culinary delight. More importantly, they are critical to maintain healthy waters. Shellfish act as natural filter feeders and each oyster or clam can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day. This helps improve the quality of the water by removing pollutants such as excess nitrogen, which, unfortunately, is being pumped into our waters each day. The excess nitrogen leads to low or no dissolved oxygen, which hurts all water inhabitants. The clam and oyster population in Long Island Sound has been increasing since 1995 (really good news) but lobsters continue to struggle (not so good).

Personally, I love the way a clamming boat looks coming home from a day at sea, with its nets rolled up, the baskets of clams aboard and the captain at the helm in his or her waist-high waders. We need to preserve this environment. There is a group called the Citizens Campaign for the Environment and its members are trying to get more government funding to help clean up the Sound and keep it clean for future generations. Check out the group’s website at citizenscampaign.org to see how you can help.

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles.
