Last Saturday, 114 people (including yours truly) attended the Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School’s Class of 1976 reunion down on the Jersey Shore. The party was held at the beautiful pool house at the Rumson Country Club in Rumson, New Jersey, where Bon Jovi has a house and I used to have one. He sings the words, “Who says you can’t go
home?” and it’s true. You can go home, and even though someone tore down the house you grew up in and built a concrete monstrosity in its place, you can still go

home

and feel deeply your roots.

Someone traveled to the reunion from Switzerland. There were a few from California and some from Texas. New England was well represented, as were Georgia and South Carolina. The closest person lived around the corner. The most kids anyone could boast about raising was eight. A few were grandparents.

I passed the river where we used to go crabbing, the hospital where I was born, my old church and the schools I attended. Things were familiar—yet not. But the friends I saw were still my friends and the connection was still there. You can go home, even if it’s once every 10 years.

A Good Cause: The family of John Scharf, a Manorville resident who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, is hosting a golf tournament in John’s memory on Friday, August 19, at the Swan Lake Golf Course in Manorville. There will be a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Dinner and cocktails will follow the golfing. Tickets are $135 each for golf, lunch, dinner and an open bar. Proceeds will benefit disabled veterans. For more information, call 909-8166 or 998-3779.

Manorville resident Rudolf Mikkelson, a student at the Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus, was recently honored with an Excellence in Technology and Design Award from the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas, in conjunction with the Kennedy Center American College Theater National Festival. One student from each region was selected for the award and each attended a one-week master class in the area of their choice. Rudolf chose a class in moving lights/lighting technology.

Rudolf plans on attending a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a focus on lighting design and theater. He also plans on continuing his performances as a magician!

Students in grades nine through 12, who will be members of the Eastport South Manor Marching Band this fall, will have a rehearsal on Thursday, July 21, from 7:15 to 9 p.m., and on Friday, July 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. Marching Band Camp for all band members will be held the week of August 1-4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This year’s field show will feature the music of Led Zeppelin. Additionally, a meeting for ninth grade band members and their parents will be held at the high school on Thursday, July 21, at 6 p.m.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
