Eastport community notes, June 3

author on Jun 1, 2010

Okay. So, the other day I was on Montauk Highway in Eastport and passed my son. But this time he was driving MY car and I was riding HIS bike.

Say what? It was pretty funny because we actually passed each other right in front of the elementary school. He waved and beeped. I waved and, well, thought that THIS is weird.

But the good things in life can always be celebrated with an ice cream cone. You do it when they are little, and you still do it when they pass their driving test, or graduate from college, or get good scores on their SATs.

I would have bought him an ice cream cone even if he failed his road test. But the ice cream cone of victory was so much sweeter. We sat side by side at Snowflake last Friday afternoon eating our victory cones, not really talking, both thinking about the future. I kind of didn’t want it to end. But I’m learning how to store these moments away in my heart, where I can find them later. As my sister Lynda would say, “That was a good one!”

Honoring Our Veterans: So a beautiful Memorial Day found me on my bike riding to the school for the annual Memorial Day service. The Eastport South Manor marching band performed, the veterans placed wreaths, Pastor Charley from the Eastport Bible Church led the group in prayer, and “Taps” was played.

It was a gorgeous morning to pay tribute to our veterans—past and present. The Eastport American Legion members were there as were the members of the Eastport Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary. With the birds singing in the background, a little breeze from the north and the abundant sunshine, you couldn’t help but be thankful for all you have. Thank you EMTs, police officers, volunteer firemen and women, and all who contribute their time and a part of their hearts and life to our community.

The College Front: Congratulations to Grace Hood of Eastport who received her bachelor of arts degree in English from SUNY at New Paltz earlier this month.

We would like to welcome a new business to Eastport. Chef’s Prime is located at Olish Farms and offers kosher meats, catering, seafood and more. They will be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the new location on Eastport Manor Road. Call 801-2833 for more information or to place a special order.

The full moon of June is the Strawberry Moon and you know what that means: local strawberries are here! I love June with the roses and the strawberries, and beginnings and endings, and the promise of a bright future for so many. There is a certain feeling that comes with this month. A kind of freedom and optimism. So enjoy and be safe.

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories.
