An Eastport man has been arrested for the second time within a month, again for a possible connection to a killing.

Nassau County Police say Douglas Coudrey, 22, was involved in a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday, January 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Plainview. He was already facing murder charges for another incident in New Jersey.

According to Nassau County Police detectives, police received a 911 call reporting a shooting victim in front of a house on Margaret Drive East. Police responded to the scene and found Justin Gottlieb, 27, at his home with gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Kenneth Regan, 21, of Centereach was also arrested in connection with the incident. Both Mr. Coudrey and Mr. Regan are being charged with second-degree murder and were arraigned Thursday morning, February 6, at 1st District Court in Hempstead.

At a press conference at Nassau County Police headquarters following the arraignment, Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick, the commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad, addressed the arrests of the two men. He said video surveillance and a detailed investigation led detectives to the pair.

Mr. Coudrey’s earlier arrest came on January 22, when Suffolk County Police picked him up at his home. Authorities said that four days earlier, at 12:16 a.m., New Jersey State Police received a call claiming that shots had been fired on Interstate 80 westbound near Lodi, New Jersey.

The responding officers found a black 2019 Honda Civic in the middle lane of the highway. Police said the driver, identified as Luis Perez, 27, of the Bronx, was shot in the neck and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the front-seat passenger, Jose Mercado, 24, also of the Bronx, was shot in the chest and taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center. A third passenger, unidentified by police, was uninjured.

Both Mr. Coudrey and Mr. Regan were charged in Lodi with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose — all felonies.

Additionally, Mr. Coudrey has been charged in Suffolk County with criminal possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and felony escape. Mr. Regan was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories. Proceed With Caution

Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town. They essentially look at the existing zoning, then allow those rules governing what can be done on properties to be reconsidered if there’s a newer concern to be addressed. In a bid to clean up the process for creating more affordable housing, the Town Board is looking at a new overlay district that ... by Editorial Board
