Algernon Brewster Jayne Jr.
Former Eastport resident the Reverend Algernon Brewster Jayne Jr. of Steelton, Pennsylvania, died on January 14 at Harrisburg Hospital, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Known as “Bruce,” he was 84.
Born on September 12, 1926, he was a 1944 graduate of Eastport School. He worked on his parents’ dairy farm, Shady Lodge Farm, in Remsenburg before serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Weimar, Germany, during World War II. He was a nurse at the Masonic Hospital in Michigan and worked his way through Alma College and Seminary at the University of Dubuque, Iowa.
A member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Steelton in Pennsylvania as an ordained minister, his career was in the Wyoming and Central Pennsylvania United Methodist Conferences, which included churches in Fountain Green, Illinios; Spencer, Afton, and Worcester, New York; and Camptown, Wiconisco, Locust Street UMC in Steelton and Manada Hill, Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan E. Haslett Jayne; two sons, Scott Jayne and his wife Donna and Kevin Jayne, all of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Laura Jayne of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Eileen DiRuocco of New Hampshire, Sybil and her husband Dale Bath of Lake Placid, and Susanne and her husband George Ketner of Pennsylvania; a grandson, Austin Jayne; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by two brothers, David and Walter Jayne.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 22, at 1 p.m., at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Steelton, Pennsylvania.
