Eastport, Remsenburg And Speonk Community Notes, August 20

authorStaff Writer on Aug 17, 2015

On this day five years ago, my family and I welcomed our youngest daughter, Taylor, into the world. She’s loved by so many people and I just wanted to start this week’s column by wishing our sweet little girl the happiest of birthdays!Next I’d like to give a big shout-out to a father-son team, David and Ben Horton of Remsenburg, who competed in their first USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 9, under the guidance of Remsenburg’s Team Infinitri head coach Laura Hartman.

Competing with the best in the nation, David earned a spot in the Male 45 to 49 age group, while 16-year-old Ben earned his spot in the Male 15 to 19 age group.

“Competing on such a level, along with thousands of athletes from all around the country, is truly amazing and has made me realize how much I love the sport,” Ben said.

It is worth noting that Ben is the only teen on the Remsenburg-based triathlon team. The other members have taken him under their wing and encouraged him to dig deep and do well. His nickname is “Rocket,” his mother, Kerry Horton, told me.

According to his coach, the weather was perfect, the venue on the lake in Milwaukee was spectacular and both men did great in their first go at the national level. Coach Laura is super-proud of them and looks forward to both men qualifying for nationals next year in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School will be holding a 50th anniversary celebration in the upcoming 2015-16 school year. To commemorate the anniversary, they are looking for an original “fun and kid-friendly” new logo design that exemplifies the following theme, “Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence.” The winning logo will appear on event T-shirts.

All current students, as well as Remsenburg-Speonk alumni, are encouraged to participate and enter their own logo into the design competition. All entries must be submitted by Tuesday, September 1, and must be on white paper in black ink or an original computer drawing. Please note that copyrighted material will not be accepted and all entries will become the property of the school.

Please mail all entries, along with the designer’s name, address, phone number and email address, to Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School, P.O. Box 900, Remsenburg, NY 11960.

If you have any questions, please contact the school’s secretary, Deborah Martel, at (631) 325-0203, ext. 101.

Be sure to stop by The Academy located at 130 South Country Road in Remsenburg to view the artistic works of Michael Pope. “Pope Works,” a collection of metal sculptures, clocks and cashmere, will be on display on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., through Sunday, August 23.

I hear that the opening reception held last Saturday was well-attended. Congratulations, Michael!

Deer hunting season begins on October 1. Christian Killoran, president of the Hunters for Deer organization, will host an informational meeting on this year’s Deer Management Program next Thursday, August 27, at 6:15 p.m., at a private location in Remsenburg.

Please keep in mind that the event is a meeting, NOT a debate, and is only open to those who support the program and are looking for additional information about ongoing efforts to thin the number of deer in the community. Please email Mr. Killoran at cdklaw@optonline.net for meeting location and additional information.

The next performance in the Westhampton Cultural Consortium’s Gazebo Concert Series, held every Thursday evening on the Village Green in Westhampton Beach, will feature jazz and soul vocalist Rhonda Denet and the Silver Fox Trio from New York City. Starting at 7:30 p.m., they will be performing a series of jazz standards and soul classics that span five decades and pay tribute to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight and more.

Then next Thursday, August 27, the Atlantic Wind Symphony takes the stage at the gazebo, located on the corner of Mill Road and Main Street in Westhampton Beach. Formed in 1968, the Atlantic Wind Symphony is the oldest fully professional concert band on Long Island. Its “summer pops programs” include songs from such composers as Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and John Philip Sousa, as well as music from Broadway, the movies and popular recording artists.

As always, if it rains, head over to the Westhampton Beach High School auditorium on Lilac Road to enjoy these shows.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
