Eastport, Remsenburg And Speonk Community Notes, July 23

authorStaff Writer on Jul 20, 2015

There is a lot of new construction going on in our area, and I’ve also seen several homes receiving repairs and upgrades. If you consider yourself a handyman, architect, or are in general contracting, here is an event you won’t want to miss!On Thursday, August 6, Speonk Lumber at 207 Montauk Highway will be hosting a Charity Sidewalk Sale, with all proceeds benefiting Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a sleep-away camp for special needs children in Center Moriches.

According to Grant Werner of Speonk Lumber, items in the sale will include new, previously unsold merchandise, including Andersen and Marvin windows, interior and exterior doors, millwork items, roofing, siding, moldings and more. Mr. Werner shared that Speonk Lumber can recommend local contractors to anyone needing assistance with installation of any purchased item.

“The largest inventory needed to liquidate is in Andersen windows, which will be going for pennies on the dollar,” Mr. Werner noted.

The sale will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is open to the public. Complimentary hot dogs and ice cream will be offered as well! Be sure to make your list now, and stop down to shop and help support Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

A little factoid: This camp has been in operation for the past 68 years! It is because of private donations from local businesses and organizations, along with the Moriches Rotary Club, that the camp is able to open its doors to the kids each year. So, a big thank you goes out to Speonk Lumber for giving back to our neighboring community.

Another local event to consider putting on your calendar is happening on Friday, August 7, at the beautiful and historic Remsenburg Community Church on South Country Road, also known to many as “the red brick church.”

In his first performance in Remsenburg and the Hamptons, classical guitar soloist Lyle Sheffler will perform at 7:30 p.m. and should finish around 9 p.m. A reception will follow the recital inside the White Chapel.

While there is no charge to attend, a suggested donation of $20 is appreciated. All are welcome.

During the performance, Mr. Sheffler will talk about the pieces he is playing, which will begin with “Sonata K. 322” by Domenico Scarlatti and conclude with a performance of “Grand Solo Op. 14” by Fernando Sor. The Plainview native who now lives in San Francisco is set to perform eight pieces with a brief intermission.

Who else loves some classic Paul McCartney tunes? Tonight’s Westhampton Cultural Consortium’s Gazebo Concert Series features Billy Ray & Friends performing hits from Beatles legend Paul McCartney.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Thursday, July 23, on the Westhampton Beach Village Green, located on the corner of Mill Road and Main Street. As always, there is no charge to attend and all are welcome. Rain moves the show indoors to the Westhampton Beach High School auditorium on Lilac Road.

Next Thursday, July 30, soprano Stefanie Izzo will sing songs from the Great American Songbook.

Tomorrow, Friday, July 24, Art Remsenburg will open its doors to a new collection of works by artist Peter Beston that will be on display at The Academy on South Country Road in Remsenburg for the next three weeks. The exhibit, “Daylight and Darkness,” runs from this Friday through Sunday, August 9.

An opening reception will be held this Saturday, July 25, from 5 until 8 p.m. Weekly exhibit hours are 3 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. All are welcome and there is no charge to attend.

In recent news about our local students, Erin Gomez of Eastport, a 2012 graduate of the Eastport South Manor High School, has made the Dean’s List for the spring semester at SUNY Cortland, where she is majoring in outdoor recreation. Way to go, Erin!

I’m also told that Brenna Hanratty of Speonk has been named to the University of Delaware Dean’s List for the spring semester. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
