As the mom of two awesome little girls, you can imagine the sweetness of my Mother’s Day. One full of hand-crafted cards and pictures, and my oldest demanded that they make me “breakfast in bed.” The day was beautiful and their minds soon wandered, so we grabbed breakfast sandwiches from Bagels and Brunch in Speonk. Then off they were to ride their bikes with me trailing them in my running shoes for most of the day.Bikes. This has been on my mind for the last six years, and now I have a forum to request your attention. Please be aware and courteous to bicyclists; in other words, “Slow down!”
There was an incident a few years ago when one of my kids was in a baby seat on my bike, and we were inches from getting bumped by a driver who could not wait 10 seconds for us to cross the bridge at South Country Road and Brushy Neck. Your car will surely make up that time before you hit the stop sign.
And, respectfully, I would like to remind everyone that the speed limit on most roads is 30 mph. Also, please don’t text and drive. And likewise, bicyclists need to remember to stay in their designated lanes whenever possible.
Just needed to say my piece now as the weather improves and bike riders reemerge.
Eastport Elementary School started its second year of teaching math, social studies and literature through activities revolving around the school’s gardens. On May 1 and 2, they enjoyed school-wide planting days. Applying information learned in class, many helped by installing rope grids, according to their measurements in raised beds, while others planted a “three sisters” garden (corn, beans and squash), as well as potatoes and onions.
Raynor Country Day School enjoyed a Mother’s Day Tea last Friday during school, which is an annual tradition for the Pre-K and kindergarten families.
You were quite lucky if you had the opportunity to attend Raynor’s spring concert, a “Tribute to Elton John.” The performance by the first-, second- and third-graders was held on Tuesday, May 6, followed by the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students last Friday. Featured hits covered by the school’s choral groups included: “Crocodile Rock,” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” “The Rocketman” with a solo by sixth-grader Michael Balsamo, and “Circle of Life” by the Senior Band.
The Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary Spring Concerts are going on this week, too! Themed “Dress to Impress,” students in kindergarten through grade three had their performance on Tuesday, while the fourth, fifth and sixth grade band, chorus and marimba students will perform tonight, Thursday, May 15, starting at 6 p.m., in the gymnasium.
Don’t be surprised when you drive down South Country and find giraffes, cows, rhinos and mermaids. ART Remsenburg is excited to introduce the Sculpture Garden at the Remsenburg Academy, courtesy of artist/sculptor Kyle Pearce.
These whimsical and large metal animals, and other creatures, are forged from the hoods of old cars in Mr. Pearce’s workshop in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Originally from Bethpage, Mr. Pearce is driving the pieces up for installation in time for the opening of art season at the Academy, which begins on Friday, May 16.
Reminder: “Here Comes the Sun,” curated by the East End Arts Council, will be on view at the Academy from Friday, May 16, through Sunday, June 1. The opening reception is next Friday, May 23, from 5 to 7 p.m., and it is open to the public. This will be a lovely show featuring paintings, photographs and sculptures that reflect the light and color of summer on the East End.
Register now for the seventh annual Peg Larkin Memorial 5K Run and Fun Walk to be held on Sunday, June 1, at 9:30 a.m., starting at the Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School on Mill Road. This event supports our youth. Pre-registration fees are $25 for adults and $20 for those 17 and younger. The cost jumps to $30 for everyone if you register on the day of the race. Make your reservations by Saturday, June 7, for The Remsenburg Association’s annual Solstice Party to be held at the Remsenburg Academy, 130 Main Street, on Saturday, June 21, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. You’ll enjoy some fabulous food, an open bar and raffles! This event is open to members and their guests. Tickets are $60 per person if purchased in advance and cost $75 at the door—if they’re still available.

Sunday, May 18: Eastport Bible Church on Montauk Highway is holding a bone marrow registration drive, from noon until 6 p.m., for congregation member Toni Petersen. Those between 18 and 55 may register.
Friday, May 23: Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School Memorial Day Parade, starting at 10 a.m. at the Mill Road school, and continuing down South Country Road. Service will follow at the memorial at South Phillips Avenue. All are welcome to join in this annual event.
Friday, May 30: Raynor Country Day School Pre-K theater production of “The Wizard of Oz” and Junior Theatre production of “Aladdin.” The show begins at 6:30 p.m. and there is no cost to attend. All are welcome.
