Edith Irene Lindholm Adelman of Amsterdam, New York, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam on Sunday, August 21, with her family at her side. She celebrated her 101st birthday on January 11.

Born in Southampton in 1910 to Polish and Finnish immigrants, she was raised with four brothers.

Later, she married John “Jack” F. Adelman in Pompton Lakes and together they raised three children. After her children were grown, she worked as a catalog switchboard operator and sales representative for the Sears and Roebuck Company in Middletown. After retirement, Mr. and Ms. Adelman moved to the Mohawk Valley to be near their daughter, son and grandchildren.

Ms. Adelman loved to cook and bake for her family, and her great-grandchildren will fondly remember “Grammy’s” sweet treats. She enjoyed reading, staying current on national and international news and politics, sewing, traveling, and spending time outdoors, especially in her garden by the water. She was a proud member of the National Republican Party.

Ms. Adelman was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, family said.

She is survived by her children, David F. and his wife Karen Adelman of Massachusetts, Edith and her husband Richard L. Kennedy of Fort Plain; grandchildren, Deborah Kennedy Decker and her husband Pieter of Virginia, Richard F. Kennedy and his wife Joanne, John Scott Kennedy and his wife Susan, all of Fort Plain, and David Michael Adelman of North Carolina; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Kristina, Kayla Irene-Elizabeth, and Laura Kate Decker of Virginia; Jacob, Kendall and Olivia Kennedy of Fort Plain; and Benjamin Adelman of South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1994, and a son, John Adelman in 1998.

The family received friends on Friday, August 26, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Fort Plain. A funeral service was held that day with Pastor Nancy Pullen officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda. Arrangements were under the direction of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home in Fort Plain.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Edith I. Adelman may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church, 1254 Stone Arabia Road, Fort Plain, NY 13339.

The Final Step

As Southampton Town considers aggressive action on sand mines, with plans to use amortization — a tool last used effectively to rid the town of nightclubs and bars the town considered nuisances — to finally end the practice, it’s important to cut through the rhetoric and state some facts. Sand mines serve a clear purpose and have economic value in a region where construction is a primary driver. But the town quite simply does not allow sand mining — that decision was made years ago, and what mines exist today are preexisting and nonconforming.
