Edward “Eddie” James Luerssen of Hampton Bays died on November 11. He was 78.
A beloved local bayman, Luerssen grew up in Rocky Point, just beyond the dunes of the Long Island Sound. A childhood spent on the water fostered a love of the natural world. He studied biology as an undergraduate at Cornell University, became an avid surfer, and traveled extensively in the Caribbean and Middle East.
Luerssen put down roots in Hampton Bays, spending four decades gill netting and clamming on the Shinnecock Bay.
Though physically diminished in his later years, he remained a lover of learning, reading, and animals; always marching to the beat of his own drum.
He is survived by his partner, Madeline Piro; two children, Tosh Luerssen and Anna Luerssen; two grandchildren, Elliott and Dashiell; his siblings, Peggy Hargett and Robert Luerssen, and their families.
