Edward F. Tuohy of North Haven–Sag Harbor died on November 20 at his home on North Haven. He was 93.
He was born in Brooklyn to John Tuohy and Annie Morris Tuohy.
Mr. Tuohy enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served during World War II as a ship’s cook. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
Upon his return from service, he completed his high school education and did many various jobs. He eventually was employed by the NYC Transit Authority. He worked there for 11 years, eventually working his way up to a dispatcher. He then transferred to the FDNY, where he worked for 20 years — retiring as a captain from the Harlem Hilton, Engine 69.
Upon his retirement from the FDNY in 1977, Mr. Tuohy and his wife Joan and their family relocated to North Haven. He immediately started several more careers. He worked for King and Thomasson Bus Company for many years as manager and driver, as well as the Southampton School District as a bus driver. He also worked as a firefighter and safety technician on Plum Island, before eventually transferring to the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier.
He was a dedicated member of the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps for well over 25 years. He retired from the Corps at the age of 85.
Mr. Tuohy was adored by his family and in return was adored by them, his family said.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Mets.
Mr. Tuohy was predeceased by his wife Joan Wildhagen Tuohy; as well as his brothers Thomas J. Tuohy and John J. Tuohy; and his sister Anne Tuohy Robertson.
He is survived by his children, Michael W. Tuohy (Stacy) of Monticello, New York; Edward G. Tuohy (Suzy) of Mount Vision, New York; Jane Tuohy Bocchino (Steve) of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; Timothy J. Tuohy of Sag Harbor; and Eileen M Tuohy of Sag Harbor; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A wake was held on November 29 at Yardley Pino Funeral Home at 91 Hampton Street, Sag Harbor. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Bridgehampton on November 30, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery.
