Edward J. McCormick of Remsenburg died on January 11 at the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 80.
Known as “Joe,” he was born November 4, 1935 to Harvey and Beatrice (Coffey) McCormick. After graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, New Jersey, he attended and graduated from St. Peter’s University in Jersey City.
From 1957 to 1959 he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Germany. He then attended New York University’s School of Law and specialized for the next 40 years in municipal finance as a partner in Wood Dawson and then Hawkins Delafield and Wood, with clients from Alaska to Memphis.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary (Wheelock); three sons, Edward W. and wife Maggie of New Jersey, William and wife Tomoko of Florida, and Robert and wife Kitt of New Jersey; a daughter, Catherine McCormick Gallagher of Remsenburg; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Irene Handville of New Jersey; a brother, Harvey and wife Sarah of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
He will be missed, family members said, for his mischievous sense of humor, intellectual curiosity, and hospitality to unexpected visitors and house guests of all ages.
A funeral, with military honors, was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue.
