Edward M. Gallagher of Quogue died on February 1, 2020. He was 90.
Born in Rockville Center on June 11, 1929 to Louise and Edward Gallagher, he was raised in a suburb of Buffalo. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Canisius College in Buffalo and a master’s degree in business from Harvard Business School. Mr. Gallagher settled in Quogue in 1975 with the purchase of a home on Quogue Street.
Mr. Gallagher was a product of the era popularized by the TV show “Mad Men.” His career in the advertising agency field included positions at Compton, McCann Erickson and Ally and Gargano Advertising Inc. During his tenure as chief operating officer at Ally and Gargano, the agency was named Advertising Agency of Year by Advertising Age and completed an initial public offering. His major clients included Procter & Gamble, for whom he helped launch campaigns for Comet cleanser, Ivory liquid, and Duncan Hines mixes, Richardson Merril, where he launched Oil of Olay, and MCI.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary V. Gallagher, in February 2013; and daughter Virginia “Ginny” Gallagher in 1977. He is survived by his sister, Louise Sill of North Carolina; sons, Michael Gallagher of Vermont, and Kevin Gallagher of Massachusetts; four daughters, Susie Wolters of Connecticut, Elizabeth Heilman of Houston, Martha Segretti of Maryland and Deirdre Williams of California. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren.
A private burial is planned at Quogue Cemetery and a memorial service will be held in the summer 2020.
