Eino Nissila

Eino Nissila of Canada, and father of Carol Jones of Quoque, died surrounded by family at the Mauno Kahli Koti Finnish Rest Home in Northern Ontario on Thursday, April 28. He was 88.

Born in Long Lake, Canada, he was the youngest son of Kaarlo and Hanna (née Ramakko) Nissila. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. When he retired, he became the “Mad Trapper“ and spent winters on a trapline in Northern Ontario. He could recite the poems of Robert Service from heart, his favorites being “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” “Casey at the Bat” and “The Tale of Rex” were heard around many summer campfires. He authored a book, “The Pioneers of Long Lake,” a history of his homeland. Mr. Nissila visited his daughter Carol in Quogue often and became well-known and loved. He was larger than life and will be fondly remembered by all who were graced with his presence, survivors said.

He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Conway and her husband Eddie of Canada, Carol Jones and her husband Teddy of Quogue, and Cathy Neidy and her husband Mike of Canada; three granddaughters, Tiana, Emily and Zoe; longtime companion, Joyce Stromberg; and good fishing buddy, Ollie Peltomaki. He was predeceased by his brothers Arne and Vic; and sister, Laina Harju.

At his request, there will be no service. Condolences are available online at osullivandonnellyfuneralhome.com.
