Elizabeth Betty" Sawyer Dies At 90"

Elizabeth “Betty” A. Sawyer, formerly of Southampton, died at her home in Marianna, Florida, on Wednesday, January 25. She was 90.

Born in Sag Harbor on April 1, 1921, to Charles and Helen Carter, Ms. Sawyer enjoyed being a part of the Southampton community, according to family members. She is lovingly remembered to all as 
“Nanny Sawyer.”

She is survived by her children, Peg Stringham of Southampton, and Woody Sawyer and his longtime companion, Karen Smith, of Southampton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Woodrow.

The family received friends at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton on Tuesday, January 31. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 1, at the funeral home, with Pastor Leslie Duroseau officiating. Interment followed at Southampton Cemetery.

Memorial donations made to Emerald Coast Hospice, 4374 Lafayette St., Marianna, Florida, would be appreciated by the family.

Southampton DWI Arrests for the Week of May 8

Gintaras Satas, 58, of Mastic was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. on May 2 and charged with misdemeanor DWI and several vehicle and traffic violations after the vehicle he was driving nearly struck a Southampton Town Police car that was on the side of Montauk Highway in Water Mill with its lights on conducting a traffic stop of another vehicle. When approached by the officer, Satas was found to be unsteady on his feet and a breath alcohol test indicated he had been drinking more than the legal limit, according to police. by Staff Writer
