Elizabeth F. Dahlen of Denver, New York, and formerly of Remsenburg and Merrick, died on Thursday, September 11. She was 88.
Mrs. Dahlen was born in New York City on February 20, 1920. Known as “Betty,” she was a longtime resident of Merrick, before moving with her husband, Stanley, to Remsenburg in 1969. The couple relocated to Denver, New York, in 1986.
Mrs. Dahlen spent most of her years as a housewife and mother, raising her four children. She also worked as a crossing guard for the Nassau County Police Department during the 1960s.
During World War II, she worked at the Northrop Grumman Corporation in Bethpage as a riveter while her husband was overseas, earning her the wartime badge of honor as a “Rosie the Riveter.”
She was active in a variety of community affairs, including service as the co-chairman of the Merrick Cancer Drive, past president of the Empire Hose Company of the Merrick Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary, a member of St. Ann’s Guild of the Church of the Redeemer, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 847, and past member of the Remsenburg Garden Club and the Eastern Long Island Quilters Guild.
She was an avid bingo player wherever she was, survivors said, and a bowler in the 6th Battalion Nassau League. Mrs. Dahlen was a member of the Westhampton Country Club, was a Sun Bonnett Quilter, and a member of the Roxbury Senior Citizens Club.
In addition to her husband, Stanley, she is survived by three sons, Roy and his wife Ruth, Robert and his wife Leslie, and Timothy and his wife Doris; a daughter, Lisabeth Whitney; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A wake was held on September 13 and 14 at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach, where services were held by both the Merrick Fire Department and the Order of the Eastern Star. A funeral service was held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach on September 15; interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
