Elizabeth F. Dahlen of Denver, New York, and formerly of Remsenburg and Merrick, died on Thursday, September 11. She was 88.

Mrs. Dahlen was born in New York City on February 20, 1920. Known as “Betty,” she was a longtime resident of Merrick, before moving with her husband, Stanley, to Remsenburg in 1969. The couple relocated to Denver, New York, in 1986.

Mrs. Dahlen spent most of her years as a housewife and mother, raising her four children. She also worked as a crossing guard for the Nassau County Police Department during the 1960s.

During World War II, she worked at the Northrop Grumman Corporation in Bethpage as a riveter while her husband was overseas, earning her the wartime badge of honor as a “Rosie the Riveter.”

She was active in a variety of community affairs, including service as the co-chairman of the Merrick Cancer Drive, past president of the Empire Hose Company of the Merrick Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary, a member of St. Ann’s Guild of the Church of the Redeemer, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 847, and past member of the Remsenburg Garden Club and the Eastern Long Island Quilters Guild.

She was an avid bingo player wherever she was, survivors said, and a bowler in the 6th Battalion Nassau League. Mrs. Dahlen was a member of the Westhampton Country Club, was a Sun Bonnett Quilter, and a member of the Roxbury Senior Citizens Club.

In addition to her husband, Stanley, she is survived by three sons, Roy and his wife Ruth, Robert and his wife Leslie, and Timothy and his wife Doris; a daughter, Lisabeth Whitney; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A wake was held on September 13 and 14 at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach, where services were held by both the Merrick Fire Department and the Order of the Eastern Star. A funeral service was held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach on September 15; interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles.
