Elizabeth M. Lane
Elizabeth M. Lane, known as “Libby,” died on May 15 at her home in Montauk. She was 90.
Born on June 23, 1922, to Fannie and Emile Almquist in Springs, she was a member of the Lester family, known throughout the East End as baymen and immortalized in the book, “Men’s Lives.” Her family moved to Montauk when she was 6.
A survivor of the Hurricane of 1938, she was a member of the Montauk Community Church, serving as vice president of fellowship, secretary of fellowship and secretary on the board of trustees. She was also a member of the USO, an active member of the Republican Party, especially when Perry Duryea was active in politics. She worked as a waitress at the Shagwong for many years.
In 1940, she married Winfred Lane, who was an officer in charge at the Shinnecock Coast Guard station. He died in 1974.
Her companion after the death of her husband was Everett Briand, who shared her love of country music and dancing and playing cards. She enjoyed entertaining and learning her family’s history, as well as learning about antiques. She also collected Christmas ornaments and Santas. On Saturdays, she usually had a list of yard sales to visit.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by siblings, Walter, Ralph and Morton.
Visitation was at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on May 18. A graveside service took place the same day at Oak Grove Cemetery in Amagansett.
