Ellen M. Wassle of East Quogue died on June 15 in hospice care in Stuart, Florida. She was 84 and had fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
Born at Southampton Hospital on January 9, 1931, the daughter of Olive and John Eckart, she lived most of her life in Quogue and moved to East Quogue each summer. Upon retiring from the Quogue Post Office as postmaster, she and her husband, Albert “Buddy” Wassle, who predeceased her, spent many years as “snowbirds” in Port St. Lucie, Florida. In her retirement, she enjoyed painting with oils and watercolors and drew patterns for stained glass art, survivors said. She also loved to fish and traveled around the country with her husband in their camper.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Ann (Eckart) Campbell; and a brother, Jack Eckart. She is survived by a son, Lawrence W. Wassle, who was her caregiver for the past seven years.
Funeral services took place in Florida.
